Maria Toorpakai Wazir is a 22 year-old Squash player from South Waziristan, a highly conservative area of Pakistan. Many girls there aren't allowed to leave their homes and if they do they must be with a male member of their family

Sometimes it is not how you were born that creates a challenge, but where. Growing up in rural Pakistan, where women’s equality doesn’t exist, 22-year-old Maria Toorpaki Wazir found independence through sports.

Maria Toorpakai: ‘I Risked My Life To Play Squash’

Maria Toorpakai is so passionate about sport that she once disguised herself as a boy to enter a weightlifting competition. She comes from Waziristan - the ultra conservative region of Pakistan which is home to the Taliban, where many strongly believe that women should not take part in any kind of sport.
