Waziristan is located in the northwest of Pakistan, along the Afghan border and is often referred to as “the most dangerous place on earth” by world leaders and journalists. Fundamentalist and repressive, Taliban leaders don’t allow girls to go to school and many of the leaders aren’t educated themselves. There is a population of roughly 1o million Pashtuns – male literacy rates are approximately 33% and female literacy rates are less than 8%.
This region, called FATA is the hub of extremism. Males must head all households. There are limited economic opportunities. Most earn a livelihood from sheep rearing.
